Sloan Industry Studies
Sloan Studies Affiliates Although each industry in the United States faces its own set of technological and economic challenges, there are commonalities and patterns to these challenges that cut across industries and academic disciplines. The Sloan Industry Studies Program offers a dynamic forum for the exchange of ideas among scholars from a wide range of academic disciplines and industry specializations-including economics, business management, engineering, medicine, law, public policy, and sociology. Despite the diversity of research interests, these scholars find common ground in research that reflects a deep understanding of firms and the markets within which they compete. Often their research or findings also may link to more "macro" issues that translate from the behavior of industrial firms to the well-being of society and the economy. In economics, this tradition can be traced, at least, to Alfred Marshall, who made plant visits a central part of his research agenda over a 50-year career. Benefits The benefits of participating in the Sloan Industry Studies Program include access to an open exchange of ideas via a listserv as well as occasional meetings. In addition, Affiliates receive information on related activities and workshops, and updates on other special events and communications from the Sloan Industry Centers, which form the core of the program. Affiliates also are invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the Sloan Industry Centers and may be eligible for special small grants from the Sloan Foundation. Events One of the major events of the Sloan Industry Studies Program is the annual meeting of the Sloan Industry Centers, and Affiliates are invited to attend with registration fees waived. Affiliates are also eligible to apply for special small grants from the Sloan Foundation to host guest speakers from within the program, or to encourage panel sessions at their annual disciplinary meetings. Small travel grants also may be considered that promote other community building activities. Membership The Sloan Industry Studies Program is open to a wide range of scholars, including faculty members, research staff, and post-docs working in academia. We encourage participation by any scholar who seeks to ground his or her research in a deep knowledge of particular industries through visits and/or direct interviews with people in the industry. Some Affiliates are faculty members with whom researchers from a Sloan Industry Center have collaborated. Others are Center "graduates" who are now post-docs or faculty members at other universities and have a continued interest in industry studies. Whether or not a scholar has had direct links with a Sloan Industry Center, the program is open to anyone who is interested in collaborations with a Center, or in conducting industry studies themselves, or who wants to draw on industry studies research to enrich or extend their own. The key to participation is a shared commitment to research methodology that places great value on direct contact with industry. Nominations Nominations for membership in the program may be made in a number of ways. Center faculty and Affiliates can nominate new Affiliates at any time, and nominations also may come directly from the Sloan Foundation. Individuals may "self nominate" by writing to the Committee for Industry Studies at one of the addresses below. Self nominations should include a c.v. and a description of one's research interests. Nominees who accept an invitation as an Affiliate are required to join the listserv to facilitate communication; however, active involvement in listserv discussions is neither expected nor required. Nominations and requests for additional information on the Sloan Industry Studies program, should be directed to:
